Completing his PhD in Mechatronical Engineering at Stellenbosch University, Dr Sparrow’s work involved the creation of the BASE industrial automation engine. BASE solves some of the most difficult automation and integration problems faced in mining with its field distributed agent-based architecture. Dr Sparrow started a spinout company to commercialise BASE with his supervisor (Dr Karel Kruger) and a classmate Peter Kruger called Cybarete. They work closely with the Stellenbosch Mechatronics Automation and Design research group on the Real Time Information Management System of the Mandela Mining Precinct. Dr Sparrow specialises in complex reconfigurable systems and human integration in modern industrial environments. First Principles Thinking is the basis of his love for elegant, simple solutions to difficult problems.
