Chris leads Hogan Lovells’ corporate team in Johannesburg and has experience in advising local, regional and multinational clients on complex local and cross-border M&A transactions across Sub-Saharan Africa. Chris’ practice focuses on blue chip cross-border corporate M&A work across various sectors, but with a particular focus on energy and natural resources, consumer goods, financial services and telecommunications.

Chris has lived and worked in South Africa, Tanzania and Australia, giving him a unique perspective on the often competing interests of multinational investors and the interests of governments and targets in developing countries. He has advised on a significant number of cross-border M&A transactions across the continent, most of which have required a deep understanding of the relevant political landscape and regulatory environment. Chris has a strong market reputation for advising local, pan-African and multinational clients on their aspirations for growth in Sub-Saharan Africa.

In 2005, Chris graduated cum laude from the University of Witwatersrand with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree and has an Advanced Company Law Certificate from the University of Witwatersrand.

However, while the continent has the world’s biggest reserves of diamonds, cobalt, uranium, manganese, and platinum, most of this remains underground and untouched. For African mining to fulfil its potential to create wealth and drive development, these resources need to be discovered, financed, extracted and properly utilised.

Our expert panel explores the promise and perils of mining exploration across the continent as well as the technologies, policies, regulations, and practices needed to bring new African mines into existence.
