Wednesday 6th February, Cape Town: Today, the African Union, the Minerals Council South Africa, Mining Indaba, the International Council of Mining and Metals and South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources stood together to engage with the Alternative Mining Indaba (AMI).

Collectively, the industry bodies represented were pleased to have the opportunity to engage with the AMI and celebrate the gains and achievements over the past 10 years in helping to support the growth of a more inclusive mining industry for all stakeholders.

Alex Grose, MD, Mining Indaba: “We value the attendance of the AMI at Mining Indaba and the voices of the local communities they represent. Mining Indaba is a platform for engagement and collaboration between all stakeholders in the industry, and we are keen to make sure that every voice is heard. Sustainability is at the core of the conference with the theme of the event for 2019 being ‘Championing Africa’s Sustainable Economic Growth.”

Investing in African Mining Indaba, the world’s largest mining investment event, has been praised in recent years for its coverage of issues around sustainable development, local content policy and diversity in the mining industry. Sustainability has become a central part of the agenda with panel discussions involving local community representatives.

Aidan Davy, COO, ICMM, congratulated the AMI on their 10th anniversary and said when accepting the memorandum, “The dialogue we enjoy today has changed over the past 10 years. We have all worked hard to develop this dialogue and increase understanding of each other. ICMM is dedicated to a safe, fair and sustainable mining industry and we recognise that there is much more to do. This is why ICMM is committed to constructive engagement with the AMI.”
